anyone here use a rice cooker? I got one a few years ago and I really like it.
I've used one before, and I look forward to getting another one. they're so convenient! I find some types of rice cook better than others, though. Example: jasmine rice seems to cook better than brown rice. But then again, I've only ever used one of many brands of rice cookers. i'm sure the more expensive ones have different settings.
I use it for pasta.
Imp is right, those are pretty convenient for a lot of things. I actually bought one for an operation I was running in the Vending program out here a few years ago. You can pretty well boil anything you want in those things - I had a Cuisinart with a glass pot.
Doing rice on the stove is hard for some people, especially the impatient.
Brown rice by the way, takes longer. Your 20 mins for white you double that on the stovetop for brown, wild, long-grained, or any other words they have for not refining the rice.
Yeah I have made soup in mine before. I usually make brown rice in mine.
My boyfriend has one of these, and I'm thinking of getting one for myself. I have a question though. What's the best way to deal with the steam coming out of the hole in the top? he puts a paper towel over it, (still haven't figured out why), but I'm nervous about it, because the steam coming out isn't exactly cool to the touch.
As for making soup, do you literally just throw your broth and veggies in there and let them boil down?
Oven mits.
why take up counter space with a rice cooker when you can do it in a microwave? works just as well and a lot less space.
Microwaving makes things all rubbery.
yep it sure does but not rice. if you follow the instructions for making rice, it is delicious. here is how you make brown rice. put one cup brown rice and three cups water in a covered caserole. i use a plastic steamer with the wrack removed. if youwish add two tbsp butter and a pinch of salt. cook on high for 5 minutes. then cook on 50% power for 45-55 minutes. remove from oven and let sit covered for five minutes. fluff with fork and serve
Never heard of that before, thanks for the instructions. Forty-five minutes in the microwave? I've never run anything that long in there.
45-55 minutes. sure you can but it has to be at medium power. otherwise it will get too cooked. it is right on the back of the brown rice bag.
I only use my microwave for popcorn or heating leftovers. Friends have told me to cook rice or bake potatoes in them but I love the oven and stove top lol. As for the steam coming out of the top of my rice cooker I just know where that littles place is on it and don't really toch it. The rest of it is pretty cool to the toch. When I open it up I just stand back for a sec til the steam gets out.
I knew I left home without something when I went up to Minnesota. I tried making rice on the stove while I was there and hated the texture. Never again.
Soup in the rice cooker? DO TELL!!
food produce from microwave and rice cooker is different. It taste different, different texture and all that.
As far as the steam goes, its the nature of rice cooking. You are steaming your food instead of cooking them, if that make sense. Its using the heat from the steam to cooked the food.
And honestly, you should cover the steam with anything. Just be careful when you handling it, usually the steam comes from the top back of the cooker, just don't touch the top back part of the cooker, you should be find. Some other rice cooker may come from the side too, just watch out.
Anyone uses the rice cooker to bake a cake? or rather, steam a cake? You should try it, its yummy and very fast!
I made a tortilla soup in mine. The recipe came in the book that I got with the cooker. Wasn't to bad.
Oh my God! I'm so excited there's a topic on rice cookers! lol Sorry, it's only been my savior during my stay at the dorms, and it continues, even now that I have access to a full kitchen, to be a time-saver.
Actually, for anyone who's interested, here's a recipe for chicken soup. you can add noodles/pasta or rice to it, or just eat it as is. I've made it before, and it's very good.

I would suggest adding about two cups less broth and using water for the remainder of the liquid, but that's just me. :)
I love my rice cooker. I use it to prepare the rice whenI make my mom's chicken and rice casserole.
